Suggestions for short Chenrezig sadhanas?

Post by GaryByThePond »

Hello,

I received a Chenrezig empowerment a long time ago, but I never learned a Chenrezig sadhana.

Can any of you recommend a short Chenrezig sadhana?

The shortest is just the mantra OM MANI PADME HUM. Or even simpler is HRIH alone.

Thanks, but I already know the mantra (which is a great mantra! :D ).

"Sadhana" in Vajrayana normally means a the ritual text with an introduction, invocation of the wisdom deities, main visualization, and dedication of the blessings of the mediation at the end.

Well, there is an interesting Chapter in the Lotus Sutra dedicated to Avalokakitesvara.

It is very important to read it if you partake in Chenrezig meditation and calling upon Him with a single mind. There is quite a good deal of information there, it's good to read it again even if you've read it already. In fact the entire Lotus Sutra is an extremely important Scripture to read.

There are oodles of practices out there - online & in print. Suggest you find a lama/guru or just a Bhikshu and do what he says.

Here is one practice. Others are probably at FPMT site.

That is undoubtedly the traditional answer. However, I am too distrustful of most people to follow any guru closely at the moment.

Khenpo Sodargye suggests a daily, even constant practice like this:
For each one of you whether you believe in the power of mantras or not, you can have a try, as mantras possess incredible power just like medicines do, being endowed with the power to cure, regardless of whether the patients are aware of it or not. To each of us, any method that can help purify our mind is meaningful and of benefit. I’m not sure if you know how to recite this mantra or not.

Om Mani Padme Hum Hrih
Om Mani Padme Hum Hrih
Om Mani Padme Hum Hrih

You can recite it in your daily activities such as walking, washing vegetables or washing dishes, etc. If you can recite it at any time then naturally, deluded thoughts and negative afflictions such as pain, fear, anxiety, etc., will disappear over time.
Hrih is the link to Amitayus Buddha, as Je Tsongkhapa says:
The guide and protector Amitayus arises from the syllable Hrih.

This is a short version of the Chenrezig practice by Thangtong Gyalpo, it contains some very clear and concise explanations of the visualisation:
