Its more on the neurotransmitters. Dopamine to be specific. It is the attention hormone released int he brain. So in addictions and staffs, dopamine is released i high levels causing some happiness effect. Dopamine plays a role in how we feel pleasure.

Here’s a deep question: although we can all agree that addiction and chemical substances that are known as recreational drugs and stimulants are bad for us, the question is: is there any worth to the feeling of being happy while on any of them, even something as simple as coffee?

I think the Buddha would say no. Such an oddity to the body and mind is a craving, and aught to be discarded on the Way to Buddhahood and Nirvana, before one gets caught up in the material world again. After all, it fits the paradigm of how craving first developed from those Luminous Mind-made beings from the Brahma World who at one point didn’t lose their Luminosity because they had not yet craved for something as simple as the dirt they put their finger into, but when they did, needed the moon and the Sun to shine for them on account of no longer being Luminous and beginning to crave.

Some links on the studies on addiction from a Vipassana perspective, which I found insightful...

I am glad that counselling has also been advocated along with vipassana practice to guide and motivate the addict out of the problem. :anjali:
