This fellow is not unique. His experience with one famous mindfulness method was horrible. He had plenty of experience with meditation too.
Going full bore into meditation as a self-centered therapy, with no preparation with study of sacred texts, and ethical improvements in your life can cause more problems than it solves.

Good point. There have been cases of people committing suicide in the aftermath of a long retreat, especially those that tend to be secular based, Goenka style, etc. Proper preparation and study is needed first, with good quality clergy assistance.
