Altruistic Christianity

Post by Nicholas »

Self sacrifice for the benefit of others is a key activity in many paths. Here is a short article on the Xtian basis for such a life. Other examples of Xtian altruistic actions can be found, and added to this first post.

From the Old Testament:
Deuteronomy 14:28
At the end of every third year you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in that year, and shall deposit it in your town.

Deuteronomy 15:8
you shall freely open your hand to him, and shall generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks.

Job 31:16-22
If I have kept the poor from their desire,
Or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,
Or have eaten my morsel alone,
And the orphan has not shared it

Psalm 112:5-9
It is well with the man who is gracious and lends;
He will maintain his cause in judgment.
For he will never be shaken;
The righteous will be remembered forever.
He will not fear evil tidings;
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

Proverbs 19:17
One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord,
And He will repay him for his good deed.

Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
And bring the homeless poor into the house;
When you see the naked, to cover him;
And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

Isaiah 58:10
And if you give yourself to the hungry
And satisfy the desire of the afflicted,
Then your light will rise in darkness
And your gloom will become like midday.

From the New Testament:
1 Corinthians 10:24
No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

Galatians 5:14
For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Philippians 2:3-4
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,
not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

33And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way? 34But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest. 35And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.
-Mark 9, New Testament.
