Darkening Days Ahead

Post by Nicholas »

Whatever spiritual Paths exists, the overall tenor of so-called civilization today is increasingly and rapidly becoming hostile or indifferent to those Paths. Here is an essay from 1990 on the problem and whether the negative effects can be overcome:

How Russell Kirk's article begins:
Sobering voices tell us nowadays that the civilization in which we participate is not long for this world. Many countries have fallen under the domination of squalid oligarchs; other lands are reduced to anarchy. “Cultural revolution,” rejecting our patrimony of learning and manners, has done nearly as much mischief in the West as in the East, if less violently. Religious belief is attenuated at best, for many -– or else converted, after being secularized, into an instrument for social transformation. Books give way to television and videos; universities, intellectually democratized, are sunk to the condition of centers for job-certification. An increasing proportion of the population, in America especially, is dehumanized by addiction to narcotics and insane sexuality.

Kirk continues:
Writers in learned quarterlies or in daily syndicated columns use the terms “post-Christian era” or “post-modern epoch” to imply that we are breaking altogether with our cultural past, and are entering upon some new age of a bewildering character.

Some people, the militant secular humanists in particular, seem pleased by this prospect; but yesteryear’s meliorism is greatly weakened in most quarters. Even Marxist ideologues virtually have ceased to predict the approach of a Golden Age. To most observers, T. S. Eliot among them, it has seemed far more probable that we are stumbling into a new Dark Age, inhumane, merciless, a totalist political domination in which the life of spirit and the inquiring intellect will be denounced, harassed, and propagandized against: George Orwell’s 1984 (1949), rather than Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) of cloying sensuality. Or perhaps Tolkien’s blasted and servile land of Mordor may serve as symbol of the human condition in the twenty-first century (which, however, may not be called the twenty-first century, the tag Anno Domini having been abolished as joined to one of the superstitions of the childhood of the race).

The secular world needs more Votaries of the Lotus Sutra as Emissaries of Buddhism to come to it and transform the culture there. To those who only speak the tongues of atheists: what can help is the Lotus Sutra, The Dharma Jewel, which can give meaning, as divinity within it's pages is so clear that it becomes instantly normal to converse about those who are asking us to be Buddhas. It is a natural tendency, like thirsting for water, to revere the Buddha. Without feeling that God is too heavy of a subject and perfection being a fleeting feeling, the Lotus Sutra emphasizes that one must only dedicate oneself to it's Mystic Teachings, then perfection can be reached right then. A Bodhisattva in it's text is said to have a countenance that of resembling Narayan:
With that, Bodhisattva Wonderful Sound vanished from his own land and, accompanied by eight-four thousand bodhisattvas, appeared here [in this saha world]. The lands that he passed through on his way quaked and trembled in six different ways, and in all of them seven jeweled lotus flowers rained down and instruments of hundreds and thousands of the musicians sounded of themselves without having been struck.

This bodhisattva's eyes were as big and broad an the leaves of the blue Lotus, and a hundred, thousand, ten thousand moons put together could not surpass the perfection of this face. His body was pure gold in color, adorned with immeasurable hundreds and thousands of blessings. His dignity and virtue were splendid, his light shone brightly, he was endowed with many special marks and as stalwart in body as Narayana.
-Chapter Twenty-four: Bodhisattva Myozon.

I hope the Nichiren, Tian'tai, and Tibetan Schools that revere the Lotus Sutra, as well as other Buddhists who do, continue to share it's meaning and bring the once-forlorn seekers to it's gift of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, Supreme Perfect Enlightenment. The Lotus Sutra as well as the Nichiren Mantra: Nam Myoho Renge Kyo is living water that can wellspring in anyone the Eternal Life of a Buddha.

Gautama Buddha organized and structured Buddhism to be taught to the secularist and atheist too, although the true Buddhist Practitioner who has seem the Truth will testify that Buddha is divine, despite His ordinary contributed appearance, claiming to be an ordinary man that has achieved the Highest Perfection, even thousands of Brahma Kings come into the Retinue of Gautama to learn from His Enlightenment, as He went from being a provisional Buddha to being Expediently Enlightened, many others followed suit. Quickly so many gained the title of Arhat, and at the end of His days He preached the Ekayana of the Lotus Sutra, and bestowed promises of Buddhahood to His congregation. All this was thanks to Gautama's efforts to become Enlightened. The Kosen-Rufu of Nichiren Buddhists gives light to anyone who encounters it's True and Serious Votary. Where are we to transform this world in good conscience except through the Dharma? I hope we can all take heed.

Namaste, and Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.

"But although I preach nirvana, this is not a true extinction. All phenomena from the very first have of themselves constantly borne the marks of tranquil extinction. Once the sons of the Buddha have carried out this way, then in a future existence they will be able to become Buddhas."
-The Lotus Sutra, Chapter Two, Expedient Means.

Here is the way a Blue Tyrant uses "emergency powers" to extend his mandates. The Democrat State works for greater control of individuals this way.
