By accident, found this the other day:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lomaland

Apparently, they had a pretty thriving community in Point Loma. I have a place in nearby Mission Beach, so was excited to see that maybe I could drop in and see what is there. And sure enough, it is gone, sold a few times to universities and others, no longer a Theosophical community.

They even had some beautiful structures:

That is the modern theosophical lineage I am closest to.

If you can ask about Dr. Dwayne Little, who may be retired from teaching at the Nazarene college, he used to give walking tours. I knew Emmett Small (yes, Little & Small were friends) who lived at Pt Loma, and eventually, across the street from the entry to Pt Loma TS grounds. I knew many who were born or lived there.

PM me if you want a tour, I might be able to help you. Here is a bit more of the history:

After Pt Loma the TS moved to Covina and now is in Pasadena and has been for many years. Not sure if anyone there now actually lived at Pt Loma. Here is their site:

Blavatsky on personal influence:
Thoreau pointed out that there are artists in life,
persons who can change the colour of a day and make
it beautiful to those with whom they come in contact. We claim that
there are adepts, masters in life who make it divine, as in all other arts.

Is it not the greatest art of all, this which affects the very atmosphere in
which we live? That it is the most important is seen at once, when we
remember that every person who draws the breath of life affects the
mental and moral atmosphere of the world, and helps to colour the day
for those about him. Those who do not help to elevate the thoughts and
lives of others must of necessity either paralyse them by indifference, or
actively drag them down.

Today, 130 years ago, on 8 May 1891 HP Blavatsky died. Some of her heritage around the world:

White Lotus Day is when some admirers of HPB think upon her life & work:

The same question stands open from the days of Socrates and Pilate down to our own age of wholesale negation: is there such a thing as absolute truth in the hands of any one party or man? Reason answers, “there cannot be.” There is no room for absolute truth upon any subject whatsoever, in a world as finite and conditioned as man is himself. But there are relative truths, and we have to make the best we can of them.

In every age there have been Sages who had mastered the absolute and yet could teach but relative truths. For none yet, born of mortal woman in our race, has, or could have given out, the whole and the final truth to another man, for every one of us has to find that (to him) final knowledge in himself. As no two minds can be absolutely alike, each has to receive the supreme illumination through itself, according to its capacity, and from no human light. The greatest adept living can reveal of the Universal Truth only so much as the mind he is impressing it upon can assimilate, and no more. Tot homines, quot sententiae [as many men, so many opinions] — is an immortal truism.

The sun is one, but its beams are numberless; and the effects produced are beneficent or maleficent, according to the nature and constitution of the objects they shine upon. Polarity is universal, but the polariser lies in our own consciousness. In proportion as our consciousness is elevated towards absolute truth, so do we men assimilate it more or less absolutely. But man’s consciousness again, is only the sunflower of the earth. Longing for the warm ray, the plant can only turn to the sun, and move round and round in following the course of the unreachable luminary: its roots keep it fast to the soil, and half its life is passed in the shadow. . . .

Re: Theosophy on Evolution

Very complex subject, too much for me to summarize or fully understand. So here is a disciple of Blavatsky's, Dr. HT Edge, who wrote a booklet titled Evolution:

More from HPB's "What is Truth?":
On the plane of spirituality, to reach the Sun
of Truth we must work in dead earnest for the development
of our higher nature. We know that by paralyzing gradually
within ourselves the appetites of the lower personality, and thereby
deadening the voice of the purely physiological mind—that mind which
depends upon, and is inseparable from, its medium or vehicle, the
organic brain—the animal man in us may make room for the spiritual;
and once aroused from its latent state, the highest spiritual senses and
perceptions grow in us in proportion, and develop pari passu with the
“divine man.” This is what the great adepts, the Yogis in the East and the
Mystics in the West, have always done and are still doing.

SELFISHNESS, the first-born of Ignorance, and the fruit of the
teaching which asserts that for every newly-born infant a new soul,
separate and distinct from the Universal Soul, is “created”—this
Selfishness is the impassable wall between the personal Self and Truth.
It is the prolific mother of all human vices, Lie being born out of the
necessity for dissembling, and Hypocrisy out of the desire to mask Lie.
It is the fungus growing and strengthening with age in every human heart
in which it has devoured all better feelings. Selfishness kills every noble
impulse in our natures, and is the one deity, fearing no faithlessness or
desertion from its votaries. Hence, we see it reign supreme in the world
and in so-called fashionable society. As a result, we live, and move, and
have our being in this god of darkness under his trinitarian aspect of
Sham, Humbug, and Falsehood, called RESPECTABILITY.

Re: Timeless Truths of Secret Doctrine

Post by Nicholas »

Just bumping up an edited version of a 2018 post.

A recent topical compilation from Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine, put together by the late Fiona Odgren. It will have an appeal to those who wish not to read the entire 1400 pages of the original.

http://www.powells.com/book/timeless-tr ... 82263/61-0

Odgren's Foreword about the production of The Secret Doctrine is thorough & good. There are 56 major themes in this compilation. They are arranged alphabetically starting with the Absolute One Eternal Be-ness, then Angels etc.

It is a unique approach and will, because of its wide range of themes in all three areas of Science, Philosophy and Religion, attract differing groups of thinkers.

"There is but ONE Eternal Truth, one universal, infinite and changeless Spirit of Love, Truth and Wisdom, impersonal, therefore bearing a different name with every nation, one Light for all, in which the whole Humanity lives and moves, and has its being. Like the spectrum in optics, giving multicoloured and various rays, which are yet caused by one and the same sun, so theologies and sacerdotal systems are many. But the Universal religion can only be one, if we accept the real, primitive meaning of the root of that word. We, Theosophists, so accept it; and therefore say: We are all brothers—by the laws of Nature, of birth, and death, as also by the laws of our utter helplessness from birth to death in this world of sorrow and deceptive illusions. Let us, then, love, help, and mutually defend each other against this spirit of deception; and while holding to that which each of us accepts as his ideal of truth and reality—i.e., to the religion which suits each of us best—let us unite ourselves to form a practical ‘nucleus of a Universal Brotherhood of Humanity WITHOUT DISTINCTION OF RACE, CREED, OR COLOUR.’ ”
